| Unemployed youth and new sources of income | | |
NEW DELHI, JUNE 10 Delhi is living up top its reputation of being the richest Indian city in terms of per capital income. A growing tendency of people to rush out of their homes on weekends has created a new source of income for unemployed youth. With the middle class left spending their surplus money during these weekend family outings, the casual vendors work overtime to earn enough through them to sustain themselves for the rest of the week. Termed an urban village until not long ago due to the lack of night life and people preferring to spend weekends at home, the scenario has changed drastically over the years, especially after the arrival of the Metro rail. The Metro service has enabled even those who do not own personal vehicles to now go out. Downtown Connaught Place, the sprawling India Gate lawns and the historic Chandni Chowk areas are benefiting from this new trend. Metro's recent decision to extend its services until midnight has ensured increased footfall in these areas, which wear a festive look on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The weekend vendors are there to take care of all their needs, particularly at the India Gate which does not have any market in the close vicinity. They sell anything that the weekend revellers require. They serve chilled bottled water, soft drinks, chips and other snacks, chat, ice creams, paan, balloons and toys. A survey conducted has revealed they earn between Rs 500 to Rs1,000 on each of these two evenings. Unlike permanent roadside vendors who are required to pay taxes to the municipal authorities and bribe police to do their business, the weekend vendors are exempted, since they are mobile most of the time.
