6/10/2007 11:42:59 PM
Jammu, 10

The onset of summers, opening of passes has increased the threat of infiltration and subsequent terror attacks by militants. It is an accepted fact that the civil population of J&K has been hand in gloves with army and in forefront to curb the menace of terror unleashed by militants. DASHMESH battalion after winning the hearts and minds of local population of Jhangar in Nowshera tehsil picked up the mantle of empowering the civilians in self defence to combat the menace of terror. Accordingly Village Defence Committees of Jhangar, Sariya, Pogla and other adjoining villages were rejuvenated. A three day camp was organised for the said purpose. The response was overwhelming and heartwarming for the Men in uniform and a total of 30 men and 22 women including young fellows underwent the training. People were trained to keep vigil, pass, information regarding unusual activities, organize themselves to thwart any untoward incident and finally handle firearms. The interest shown by people was praise worthy. The camp was conducted by Col Ajai Sharma, Commanding Officer, DASHMESH Battalion under the aegis and supervision of Brig VK Chand, Commander. Village elders and prominent citizens interacted with Commander and Commanding Officer on the occasion and appraised them of their day to day problems and grievances. Army has assured them of all assistance. It is this joint effort between the civil populace and men in uniform which is the biggest hurdle in the militant’s endeavors and would assist in coping our this menace in totality and bring peace to the region, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release.
