| Work on medical colleges upgrading to begin soon | | | Jammu, June 10 Work on the ambitious health project- up gradation of Jammu and Srinagar Medical colleges- covered under the Prime Ministers Swasthya Surakshya Yojana is expected to start anytime in the month of August, official sources said here. Despite receiving central govt’s nod for starting the up gradation work of Jammu medical college at a total project cot of rs 120 crore the state govt was awaiting fresh nod for the Srinaagr medical college separately to start the work simultaneously at both the project sites, official sources said. “Yes we have received clearance for Srinagar Medical college days ago and now we expect to start work on both the projects in August,” a senior officer of the health department privy to the recent developments said. He said, the decision was taken by the central govt to upgrade various other medical colleges across the country to further enhance the infrastructure capacity to deal with the growing demand of patient care facilities. He said that so far central Government has cleared these projects in five states,including Lucknow and Hyderabad . Under the scheme upgradation work of each college will cost Rs.120 crores out which the centre would release Rs.100 crores and the remaining Rs.20 crores would be the state's equity.This way Jammu and Kashmir will get Rs.200 crores and the state's contribution would be Rs.40 crores.The civil work in Srinagar and Jammu is to be carried out by a central agency.In case the work was started in August the upgradation programme in Srinagar Medical college was to be completed within two years and that in Jammu within 18 months.The project sites have already been cleared at a high level meeting. On the Srinagar project about Rs.54 crores are to be spent on civil works and the remaining Rs.66 crores on procurement and purchase of equipment.Compared to this in Jammu over Rs.48 crores are to be spent on civil works and the remaining Rs.72 crores on equipment. On completion of these projects the two medical colleges will have number of superspeciality faculties which would spare people from visiting AIIMS or other top institutes in the country for treatment. Besides the Sher-i- Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences the state has two medical colleges in the private sector. The Mata Vaishnov Devi Shrine Board has already released funds for the construction of a hospital in Udhampur district.It will also have latest equipments in its surgery and diagnostic faculties.
