BARAMULLA, Mar 3: Scores of villages including residential colonies here in Baramulla town were seen submerged due to uninterrupted rains for the past 24 hours. The locals are complaining that heavy rainfall, coupled with ineffective drainage system is playing the spoilsport in the winter season. Many villages in Baramulla town including colonies across the town like Kanispora, Kowajabagh, Usmanabad Colony, Singhbagh, Kanthbagh, Gulnarpark, Azadgung and Dewanbagh, areas were seen submerged in rain water where the level has increased, entering into residential houses. Amitpal Singh of Shalimar colony Kanispora told Early Times that, "the rain water has submerged our streets and roads, as there is no out let. We are residing in low-lying areas water from upper villages comes straight away here and submerge these localities. We appealed for drainage system so that the rain water is drained into nearby river Jhelum. Many times in past we approached concern authorities of Roads and Building (R&B) for proper drainage system in our area but nothing has been done so for, but unfortunately administration gets alert when floods damage our houses, Said Amitpal. Local resident of Kanispora said that, our locality has been submerged. We have fled from our house. We have no option except to stay on roads and protest against the concerned authorities. A group of locals complained that road is dotted with potholes, down to national highway the road is completely without parapet walls making it prone to accidents. The inhabitants say that potholed roads pose a danger to the lives of commuters. The residents of Shalimar colony, especially people from Sikh community says that road is dotted with potholes, at many places, and the road is also without parapet walls making it prone to accidents. Beyond from Kanispora village many other residential colonies including, Singhbagh, Gulnarpark, Azadgung and Dewanbagh are submerged in rain water from past many few days. A local resident of Gulnarpark Azadgung, Tanveer Ahmad told Early Times, "since the colonies were built here in Baramulla town no one from administration side came to see our miseries, inundated roads, streets and by lanes irtually turned into small rivers and choked drains itself speak volumes about callous attitude of the concerned departments. According to reports that large numbers of trees have been uprooted in Kandi belt of Baramulla district blocking roads and getting entangled in transmission lines. As a result, there was no power supply in many far flung areas of Kandi belt on Tuesday, till reports last came in.It is inefficiency on part of government for being under-prepared. We have been without electricity since yesterday and government is nowhere in sight, said a caller. |
