| Kishtwar tense after protestors clashed with police | | | Kishtwar, June 10 A strong mob of more than one hundred persons took to street and clashed with police following a controversy over naming of a newly developed chowk by Tourism Development Authority in this mountainous town of Kishtwar, this afternoon. Tension gripped the town when police came to remove a sign board, fixed by some locals, from Fareedia Chowk, near the Holy Shrine of Shah Fareed-ud-Din Bagdadi (RA). A strong mob gathered on the spot and started pelting stones on the police party, eyewitnesses told News Agency of Kashmir. The police also resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob, which was shooting anti-police and anti-administration slogans. Assistant Commissioner Revenue Rajesh Kumar Shavan along with senior police officers rushed to the spot to pacify the mob but all in vain. This forced the administration to call CRPF, which chased the protestors to control the situation, the eyewitnesses added. The controversy started over the naming of the newly developed chowk by Kishtwar Development Authority. It was learnt that a tower with flood lights was constructed by the KDA in the chowk, which is adjacent to historically renowned Hidyal Chowk. A particular community demanded that the Chowk should be named as Fareedia Chowk as it leads to the Holy Shrine of Shah Fareed-ud-Din (RA), while another community has been demanding that being adjacent to Hidyal it should be named as Hidyal chowk. "Some locals fixed a sign board of Fareedia Chowk on the tower this morning which was objected by the other community", sources said. The people from one group approached the police and demanding its removal. Police rushed to the spot and tried to remove the board which turns the situation ugly. The situation remained tense in the town, till the last report came in. CRPF has been deployed in the sensitive areas of the town to avoid communal clashes, sources added.
