| Congress torchbearer of secular, democratic principles: Azad | | 'State registers record economic, political progress in last 19 months' | |
SRINAGAR:June 10 Asking Congress workers to make public service only motto of their politics, Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Congress since its inception has ruled the hearts of people for secular, democratic, people-centric and patriotic credentials. He said party has withstood challenges successfully and crossed vicissitudes to carry forward its progressive policy of development irrespective of any consideration of creed, caste, colour, religion or region. Addressing a day-long convention of JKPCC office bearers, block and district presidents, ministers, legislators and corporators here today, he said Congress is basically a movement and seeks all round welfare of the people in a strong and modern country. Azad said that during last one and a half years Congress-led rule, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed unprecedented pro-people, historic and innovative measures. "Within only one and a half months after assuming Chief Ministership, his government convened session of state legislature to enact laws giving teeth to anti-corruption act making it unique in the world. This was done to remove the stigma of second corrupt state given to Jammu and Kashmir", he said. Chief Minister said that the provisions of new anti-corruption law providing for confiscation of ill-gotten property has been so much admired by the European Union that they said "we were thinking for such a legislation over a century but could not give so far and you have enacted it in such a short period". European Union invited him to address European parliament and throw light on the legislation, he added. He said amendment to the anti-defection law making it more stringent and downsizing of ministry were other historic legislations his government passed in the legislature. He referred to creation of 8 new districts, 12 tehsils and 3 sub-divisions and said that thirty years long pending desire of the people was fulfilled. Taking a dig on those who try to create false impression that Kashmir is not receiving its due share in development, Mr. Azad said that in fact Kashmir has never lagged behind in any field during the Congress-led rule. He said Congress believes in equality and treats people of all areas alike. "We are for equitable development of all areas and evolved a mechanism of Finance Commission to ensure that every area gets its due share in resources and development". He said legislation regarding Roshni is yet another historic decision of his government and indicates the concern Congress possesses for peasants and poor people. He also referred to the measures taken to monitor progress of works and ensures speedy completion of schemes. He said institution of Additional District Development Commissioners has proved highly effective in this regard. Mr. Azad urged the party workers, office bearers and leaders to make general public aware of the historic decisions Congress-led government has taken during last 19 months to give a new work culture to the state, make administration transparent, curb corruption and launch unprecedented massive development across the state. He said party workers have to keep close rapport with the masses, interact with them at village, block and district levels and popularize the visionary policy programmes of Congress which have been put in place in the state during last 19 months and are in itself a record in last 60 years. Earlier, JKPCC President and Minister for Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed put to vote a resolution endorsing the political and economic policies of Mr. Azad-led government. The resolution was adopted unanimously. Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed speaking on the occasion gave resume of the achievements of Congress-led government both on political and economic fronts. He lauded Chief Minister for his visionary leadership and described Mr. Azad as a leader of international repute. He said that there is no truth in the story attributed to him about withdrawal of troops, etc. He, in fact, subscribes to the policy of Mr. Azad in this regard in toto. A number of speakers spoke on the occasion and extended their whole-hearted support to Mr. Azad in his endeavours to make Jammu and Kashmir politically, socially and economically a modern and prosperous state.
