| Rang de Basanti best film at IIFA | | | Yorkshire, June 10 Rakeysh Omprakesh Mehra's blockbuster Rang de Basanti was adjudged the best film at a glittering ceremony for IIFA Awards as Hrithik Roshan walked away with the top honour in the best actor category and Rajkumar Hirani won the best director's trophy.
Besides winning the best picture award after beating challenges from Dhoom 2 and Krrish, Rang de Basanti, which was India's entry for Oscars, won a total of 10 awards, including for best supporting actress and best music direction.
Starring Aamir Khan and Alice Pattern, the daughter of Britain's last governor in Hong Kong, the film was nominated in 15 categories at the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), Bollywood's version of the Oscars, at Sheffield in northern England last night. It is a story about a filmmaker who wants to make a movie about Indian freedom fighters.
"It has been a truly fabulous year," Mehra said at the awards function watched by 12,500 audience at a sports arena crowd as well as some 500 million people in 110 countries on television.
"2006 has been a landmark year for Indian cinema and this award is much more special when you know it is among great films. 2006 belongs to a changing time in Indian cinema."
At the five-hour ceremony, Hrithik Roshan won the best actor award for Krrish, Rani Mukherjee was named best actress for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna while the best director's award went to Rajkumar Hirani for Lage Raho Munnabhai.
