Killing of student sparks protest at Dalgate
Police says killed youth was a ‘militant’

SRINAGAR , AUGUST 09: Killing of a BA second year student, of Amar Singh College , identified as, Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh son of Mohammad Sultan Sheikh of Taweedah-bad, Bandipore by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), personnel sparked a protest demonstration at Dalgate in the heart of the Srinagar city on Wednesday. However, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, S M, Sahai said that the killed youth was a militant and was killed by the troopers, while trying to lob a grenade.

Eyewitnesses said that CRPF personnel were frisking a youth, when two shots were heard. They added, shots created panic in the area and after the two shots, entire area was cordoned. After the incident top ranking police and CRPF officials rushed on the spot to take the stock of the situation. IG, CRPF, told reporters that, killed youth was a militant and was shot dead by the troopers, when he tried lobbing a grenade towards the CRPF troopers, from 172 battalion.

IG Kashmir, SM. Sahai, said that, “Head constable of the CRPF was checking the youth, however, he (youth) resisted and tried to pull out the pin of the grenade and scuffle broke out between the two, in the process youth was shot dead.” He added, “ two hand grenades were recovered from the possession of the slain youth.”
Reports said that after the news about the killing of the youth spread in the area, people including men and women came out on the roads and staged a protest. Protesters were alleging that the youth was ‘murdered’ in cold blood by the CRPF personnel and nothing was recovered from him.
