Hosts J&K Police loses as semis line up drawn

JAMMU, Mar 12: Hosts Jammu and Kashmir Police could not survive after the experienced side suffered a 3-5 loss in the hands of young men from New Gurdaspur Club in their first outing in the ongoing IV All India Police Martyrs' Hockey Tournament at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today.
The third-day of the event witnessed a hectic schedule with four matches spread across two sessions decided the semifinalist teams. Since both the local sides of J&K Police and J&K XI already packed, the formidable sides of Indian Air Force (IAF), Punjab and Sindh Bank, New Gurdaspur and Punjab Police qualified for the last four stages.
Now, in the semifinals, IAF shall be playing against the young side of Punjab and Sindh Bank while New Gurdaspur Club shall take on Punjab Police tomorrow afternoon.
Earlier, in the quarterfinals, J&K Police lost 3-5 via tie breaker to Gurdaspur Club. In the stipulated time the match ended in a 1-1 draw. However, in the penalties, J&K Police looked weak against well prepared and technically sound young men from neighbouring Punjab.
In the given time, Gurdaspur took first lead sounding the board in the 45th minute through Jatinder Singh. The lead was soon equalised by J&K Police when Satwant Singh converted a penalty corner into goal. Later, Jaspreet Singh and Amrinder Singh could only net the ball while Sikander Paul Singh and Bhanu Partap Singh missed.
On the other hand, Gurdaspur successfully netted all the penalties taken by Amrit Paul Singh, Gurtej Singh, Pawandeep Singh and Harjot Singh. Jatinder Singh was declared man of the match. He was given away the special prize by special guest, SAI Badminton coach, Sat Pal Sharma.
Meanwhile, in other quarterfinal, Punjab and Sindh Bank trounced Namdhari XI 2-0. Sarwanjit Singh and Parvinder Singh scored the goals in 18th and 55th minutes respectively. Parvinder was named man of the match and presented the cheque worth Rs 4,000 by SO to ADGP Armed, Javid Ahmad Matoo.
The IAF defeated Border Security Force (BSF) by three goals to on. Major Singh (23rd), Damanjit Singh (45th and 59th) were the scorers. From BSF, Sharanjit Singh reduced the margin netting the ball in the dying 65th minute.
In another quarterfinal of the day, Punjab Police registered a 5-4 win against Corps of Signals. Satvinder Singh of Punjab Police was adjudged SNTPL man of the match.
