| Mangat for exploitation of states potential of medicinal plants | | | SRINAGAR, JUNE 11 – Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma has stressed for exploring possibilities of utilizing herbs and medicine plants in pharmaceuticals the state has great potential in the sector. He said the state has distinct climatic zones ranging from sub-tropical, temperate to alpine and cold and is abundant in herbs of medicinal value. The Minister was addressing a meeting of the governing body of J&K State Medicinal Plants Board held here today. Secretary Health and Medical Education Mr. K. B. Jandial, Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. C. M. Seth, Director ISM Dr. Abdul Kabir Dar, Director Agriculture Mrs. Vinod Bhalla, HOD Botany Kashmir University Prof. A. H. Mushni, Controller Drugs Dr. Mr. M. A. Khatib, HOD MAP’s SUKAST K Dr. M. A. Sadiqui, Director Horticulture Mr. G. S. Naquesh and senior officers from industry, social welfare, JAKEDA health and family welfare and other allied departments attended the meeting. Appreciating the efforts of the Board in bringing awareness among the public about the importance of medicine plants in present day scenario and its economic and health related benefits besides employment generation, Mr. Sharma emphasized the need of coordinated efforts of all the stake holders including RRL, Forests, SUKAST, Agriculture and Industry departments for transfer of technology from research institutions to the farmers. He also called for involving NGOs in the sector and collective approach to benefit entrepreneurs, farmers and promote herbal tourism. He said for conservation and development of medicine plants sector in the state an advanced mechanism is required to be evolved. The meeting took some decisions for ensuring peoples participation for the cultivation of herbs and medicine plants in public and private sector. A high level committee under the chairmanship of Secretary Health and Medical Education with senior officers from Forests, Industries and experts has been constituted to discuss and prepare draft proposal for effective implementation of herbal and medicine plants production, marketing and involvement of private sector. This proposal will be presented to the Chairman National Medicinal Plants Board during his visit to the state in next month. Another committee comprising DFO, district medical officer (ISM), district horticulture officer, district agriculture officer and botanist from degree colleges has been constituted to monitor physical and financial achievements of the sanctioned projects both in government and non-government sectors. Dr. Kabir who is also the Member Secretary of the Board gave a detailed power point presentation on the occasion.
