| PDP-Cong fall out in cabinet | | Differences: No postings in new distts | | Jammu, June 11: No patchwork among warring partners in power corridors is in sight as the strange-bedfellows –the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress –fought it yet again today as the State Cabinet met in Srinagar under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The cabinet had on its agenda an elaborate list of transfers and postings in the administration but due to differences among the major partners, nothing substantial could be executed. The embittered Peoples Democratic Party Ministers showing no signs of reconciliation with the Congress created noisy scenes in the meeting prolonging the deliberations to more than three hours. Amidst serious differences of opinion among the coalition partners and PDP’s masked threat to pull out of the government, the cabinet could not take any decision on appointment of officers to the newly created districts. The appointment of officers, particularly the SSPs and heads of other departments –summing up to nearly two dozen in each districts –was basically the bone of contention between the PDP and the Congress, sources said. The tussle was evident. PDP wanted its own trusted and loyal officers while the Congress had a different list to choose from. As PDP refused to agree even on a single officer, the exercise seemed collapsing but the decision on this account had to deferred for the next meeting, said the sources. The hitch between the PDP and the Congress over posting of officers in new districts is the hovering clouds of elections. As already reported exclusively by EARLY TIMES, there are standing directions from the central government to keep the tenure of officers fixed for at least two years. Any party which manages the officers of its choice aims at dividends at the election time, commented a senior leader from the Congress. |
