| HuM commander killed in Shopian | | | SRINAGAR , AUGUST 09: A top commander of Harkat-ul-Mujaheedin (HuM) was killed and a soldier was injured, when his riffle went off accidentally in two different incidents since yesterday evening in South Kashmir .
According to the reports reaching here, a battalion commander of HuM identified as Mohammad Sulaiman Bhat a Pakistani national was killed in a fierce encounter with troops at Neldoora Shpoian in South Kashmir on Wednesday. Sources said that on a tip off soldiers from 62 Rashtriya Riffles and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off Neldoora village on Wednesday morning and launched search operations. They added that as troops were zeroing in, militants holed up inside the area opened fired at troops, which was retaliated by them (troops), thus triggering a gun-battle. In the encounter which ensued, Battalion commander of HuM was killed.
Police claimed that the slain militant was responsible for several killings, prominent among those were killing of a surrendered militant, Javaid Ahmad Shah (7 May), Azad Ahmad Bhat (27 May), Mukhtar Ahmad Sheikh (1 June) and Bashir Ahmad of Kokernag (19 July).
In other incident, a soldier was injured, when his own service riffle went off accidentally at main bazaar Shopian on Wednesday morning. Eyewitnesses said that gun shot created panic in the entire area, however, injured soldier was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
