LeT militant's associate at large, SIM card holds the key
6/13/2007 11:56:56 PM

NEW DELHI, JUN 13 A Laskhar-e-Toiba militant nabbed yesterday was tasked with setting up a base here to carry out an attack and at least one of his associates is suspected to be hiding in the capital, police said today.
Police have launched a hunt for the man, who according to arrested LeT militant Mohd Mukhtar Ahmed Khan was supposed to collect the explosives from him for carrying out strikes soon, a senior official said.
Interrogation of Khan has also revealed that the plot was hatched by Laskher chief Abu-Al-Kama, the mastermind behind the deadly pre-Diwali blasts in 2005, who is operating from Pakistan.
According to sources, Special Cell sleuths have raided a hideout in the capital on the basis of the information given by the arrested militant and recovered a SIM card, his Indian passport and some cash.
Senior police officials said the contents of the SIM card including his phone call details are being examined as it has come to light that Khan had stayed in the capital earlier this month.
"He had arrived in the capital on May 31 and stayed at a temporary shelter here. His intention was to familiarise with the city. He then left for Kashmir on May eight and returned yesterday," Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said.

Khan, a resident of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, has told police that he was planning to leave for Pakistan today to meet Lashker top bosses there to give final shape for the terror plot.

"Khan was to catch the Delhi-Lahore bus today. He had stayed in that country for three months from January this year and received training in handling of weapons and bomb making at a Lashker camp in Muzaffarabad," Kumar said.
Significantly, he had travelled by the Samjhauta Express after procuring a valid Pakistani visa and Indian passport and stayed there with one Maulvi Kuddus.
Police have recovered his passport and Pakistani visa valid for one month, a ticket for the Delhi-Lahore bus and some documents, which they said was of incriminating nature.
"He was working for Mohd Abu Hamza and Abu Tahir, district commanders of Baramulla and Kupwara, and receiving instructions from Al-Kama. He reached here on their directions and was to go to Pakistan to finalise the plot," another Special Cell officer said.
Khan was arrested from Azadpur fruit market in northwest Delhi last evening with 1.5 kg or RDX, two electronic detectors and a timer while he was waiting to deliver the consignment to someone.
"He has told us his name and other details. We are hunting for him," Kumar added.
