| Rains cool some North Indian states | | Capital, J&K remain hot | |
NEW DELHI, JUNE 13 Light to moderate rains cooled several parts of North India even as hot and humid conditions persisted in the national capital and some areas of Jammu and Kashmir with four more deaths, including that of a former legislator, reported in Madhya Pradesh today. The mercury level inched towards the 40 degree mark here with the maximum temperature settling at 39.8 degrees Celsius, a rise of 2.6 degrees since yesterday. The minimum was 28.5 but the maximum humidity level rose by eight per cent and settled at around 79 per cent, compared to yesterday's 71 per cent. Sriganganagar in Rajasthan was the hottest place in the entire region, recording a high of 45.1 degrees while it was 45 degrees in Churu in the state and 44.5 in Hisar in Haryana. Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar recorded the highest day temperature of 34.6 degrees this season, 6.6 degrees above normal. In spite of heavy showers in several parts of Madhya Pradesh, four more deaths were reported from various parts of the state that included a former BJP MLA Anandilal Khatik. The 70-year-old Khatik died due to sunstroke in Palera last evening. 189 people have died in North and Central India since the onset of the tormenting heat spell. Uttar Pradesh accounted for 70 deaths, Haryana 46, Madhya Pradesh 32, Punjab 19, Delhi 13 and Rajasthan nine.
