UNHAPPY WITH CONG-PDP, WP REFUGEES VENT IRE ON VALLEY LEADERSHIP
6/15/2007 12:00:35 AM

Jammu, June 14

The West Pakistan Refugees Action Committee is annoyed with the ruling coalition for having created a situation which forced it to wind up the eight-member committee, headed by Health Minister,Mangat Ram Sharma, which had been constituted by the Chief Minister for examining the demands of the refugees, settled in Jammu during the last 60 years.
Labha Ram Gandhi,President of the west Pakistan Refugee Action Committee, said here today that the committee leadership holds Congress and the PDP responsible for denying the West Pakistan refugees citizenship rights. He said that during his recent visit to Delhi he met several senior political leaders, including Raj Nath Singh,BJP Chief,George Fernandes, convenor NDA,Oscar Fernandes,Sharad Yadav and others and apprised them of the miserable plight the refugees were faced with in Jammu since 1947.
He claimed that these central leaders had told him that if the Congress led ruling coalition would have favoured grant of citizenship rights to them nobody could could scuttle it.He said that these leaders also blamed the Congress for playing politics while reviewing the “genuine” demands of the refugees, who have not been given state subject certificates with the result they were not entitled to buy any immovable property in the state.
He said that it was irony of fate that about 1.50 lakh refugees could vote for the Lok Sabha elections and not for the Assembly poll and their wards were not entitled to seek admission in professional colleges in the state.
Labha Ram held the PDP,main partner in the ruling coalition, responsible for creating a situation which gave an opportunity to the Government to dissolve the eight-member committee, constituted to examine the refugees demand for citizenship rights and other facilities. He said that the Congress was trying to play a dubious role.On one hand its leaders would try to convince the refugees that the Congress was in favour of getting their demands conceded but on the other it would blame the valley centric leaders for raising hurdles
He said that the Action Committee has decided to disrupt PDP public rallies, whenever held in Jammu, especially in Jhiri area
