| Peerzada reviews implementation of mid-day meal, other schemes | | | JAMMU, JUNE 14 To review the implementation of Mid-Day meal and other schemes of education department being operational in Jammu division, Minister for Education, Information Technology, Haj and Aquaf, Mr Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed convened a meeting with all the education officers of Jammu division here today. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sayeed said that the scheme has rendered some positive outcomes like increase in enrolment more significantly of girls, upsurge in daily attendance particularly of girls and children of weaker section, elimination of classroom hunger, parents involvement in governance of schools, improvement in retention, curbing of teachers absenteeism and social integration thereof. It was apprised that this scheme is implemented to boost universalization of primary education (Class-IV) by improving enrolment, attendance, retention and learning levels of children especially those belonging to disadvantaged section, to improve nutritional status of students at primary stage and to provide nutritional support to drought affected areas during summer vacation also. The Minister laid thrust on regular health checkup of the students through nearest health centres. In this regard, he also ensured that Secretary Health and Medical Education shall be instructed accordingly. During the meeting, it was apprised that there is an appreciable central assistance for its implementation with respect to food grains, cooking cost, transportation cost and monitoring & evaluation management. It was informed that in the year 2006-2007, 7958 schools and 3899 EGS centres totaling to 11857 institutions with an enrolment of 481495 students of primary classes were covered. Interacting with the officers, Minister took stock of the district-wise physical and financial achievements registered under various schemes in the education sector. He also reviewed Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, reconciliation of expenditure up to fourth quarter of year 2006-2007 and issues like NPEGEL, KGBV, civil works, bridge courses, remedial teaching, quality formats, text books, flow of funds, Madarasas, community mobilization, teacher training and computer aided learning (Status) were also deliberated upon. He stressed for vigorous implementation of all the schemes earmarked for the respective districts so that the desired results can be obtained. He said that these schemes are formulated mainly for the benefit of children of rural and far-flung areas and as such the benefits should reach to the deserving. On the progress of mid-day meal scheme and SSA in different districts, the Minister asked the officers to ensure that the target is achieved in the stipulated time. He asked the district officers to implement the scheme at gross root level so as to raise the enrolment in schools. He stressed for sincere and complete utilization of funds provided both by the centre and state government. Among others, Secretary School Education Mr K.M Wani, State project Director Mr R.S Sambyal, Joint Director School Education Mr A.K Raina, Joint Director SSA Mr Ashok Kumar Gupta, Joint Director School Education Mrs Prakash Kumari, Joint Director Training/Principal SIE Mr G.R Sirwal, Personnel officer Mr D.R Sharma and all district CEOs, ZEOs and DIET principals attended the meeting.
