Srinagar hosts 6th Empowered Committee meeting
Inner beauty of Kashmiris overwhelmed me: Dasgupta

Srinagar, June 15
- Finance Minister of West Bengal Mr. Asim Dasgupta who is also Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers, and is here in connection with 6th meeting of the committee, has said that the natural beauty of Kashmir and inner beauty of its people has overwhelmed him. "I will give this message to the people of my state as soon as I return", he added.
Speaking to media persons after chairing the meeting of Empowered Committee at SKICC here this afternoon said that Kashmir is full of potentialities to grow adding that the path of development should be people-oriented.
He said that the empowered committee reviewed the representations of various trade federations, businessmen and others for exemption of certain items from VAT regime. The Committee would look into the request on merits and exemption of VAT on shawls, woodcarving, wool tops, etc would be actively considered.
Mr. Dasgupta said that government of India had allotted 46 services to the states for inclusion in the State Tax Net. The detailed deliberations on finalizing the areas and working out mechanism of inclusion of these services under state tax system would be carried forward, he said.
He said exemption of public utility services like government schools, hospitals, etc from tax net would also be considered.
In reply to a question, Mr. Dasgupta said that people from West Bengal are eager to visit Kashmir and next autumn in Kashmir would witness great number of Bengal tourists. "They are willing to come and will come", he said and added that in his maiden visit to the valley he has been greatly impressed by the firendly attitude of people of Kashmir.
He said Chief Minister Mr. G. N. Azad has indicated that he is visiting West Bengal and other states to showcase state's tourism potential and encourage large-scale tourist influx. "We welcome Chief Minister in West Bengal and assure him full support and response to his efforts. This would prove a big breakthrough", he maintained.
Minister for Finance Jammu and Kashmir Mr. Tariq Hamid Karra was also present on the occasion.
Chief Minister Chattisgarh Mr. Raman Singh and Deputy Chief Ministers and Finance Ministers of 10 states are participating the 6th meeting of the Empowered Committee.
