Can we imagine a city without dustbins; isn’t it like a bride without ornaments or a rider riding on his horse without a saddle.
The city of Srinagar which consists of an approximate area of 553 sq kilometers of its total area is a city with outdust bins. A historical city with a unique history is languishing in garbage because of lack of dustbins.
Beautiful hoardings of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is found on the road sides of the city which reflects that it is the prime duty of the citizens to maintain the cleanliness in the city. Those highly valued hoardings stand high as if the SMC has touched the sky. But on the ground the situation is entirely different, a person wants to implement the impact of the hoarding in a practical shape and sphere but he is unable to do so. The established fact is that one can not find any dustbin in his charming city.
In the year 1992 a mass camping was lunched by Srinagar Municipal Corporation in regard to put dust bins on most important places but with the passage of time it vanished like any thing and it happen just a as plan.
If an organization cannot think of today, what can you expect from them for tomorrow? There are a few garbage dumps in the heart of the city which added a lot to pungent smells of the Rosy city of Srinagar. Those huge in size, few garbage boxes can not be counted as dust bins. A dust bin is a bin which you can move easily and it should not be high than 4 fts. It must be unload on daily basis. Talking to a foreigner research scholar from Cambridge Molly Blackburn,she severely accused the higher authorities and said “my bag was surely turned as a dust bin in two days and I was amazed to see such a beautiful city with out dust bins and no one cares” she added that “we must be environmental friendly, And this does not happen in my country England” comparing this city with other cities of the world where u can find multi colored dust bins every colure signifies the quality of west for example the red colure dust bin is used for plastic and polythene wastes the yellow is used for paper and cardboard wastes and green is used for vegetable wastes.
It is the best way to assess examine and evaluate the city of Srinagar with other cities of the world. admitting the fact, that much has not been done in this regard for planting dust bins in Srinagar city the health officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation said “it needs a lot of funds even we have not estimated the total cost the project” he added that “a city with out dust bins can damage the health and the environment of the people”. The newly elected Mayor Mr Ab Rasheed Pandith of Corporation denied the fact that there is non -availability of dustbins he said “ I heard it for the first time that non availability of dust bins is in Srinagar city. if we think in a border concept then we can conclude it as a grate crime.'
