| Panthers, finally decides, says ‘We are out’ | | | Jammu,June 17 The Panthers Party, which has four members in the 87-member state Assembly, today withdrew its support to the Congress led coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision to withdraw the support was taken at a meeting of the party delegates in Jammu which was presided over by Bhim Singh, its chief. The Panthers Party had lent support to the coalition Government since its formation in November 2002. Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, who headed the coalition between 2002 and 2005,had included two members from the Panthers in the council of Ministers. However, after Ghulam Nabi Azad replaced Mufti; Panthers Party had been denied berth in the cabinet. Harsh Dev Singh leader of Panther Party in the Assembly said "we have withdrawn the support to the Government after we were convinced of its nonperformance." He said "the coalition Government had failed on all fronts leading to political uncertanity in the state." He said he has listed 20 charges against the Government which included its "dubious role on the issues pertaining to delimitation of its Assembly constituencies, settlement of Pakistani refugees living in Jammu." Harsh Dev said "our party had been issuing threats of withdrawal of its support during the last one year and we had thought that this threat will force the Government to improve its performance. After getting convinced that the situation on all fronts, including corruption, militancy and proper implementation of Wazir committee report regarding creation of new districts we have announced to withdraw our support." Asked the withdrawal of the support will not lead to the fall of the Government which had still absolute majority in the provincial Assembly Harsh Dev Singh said "we have withdrawn our support on principle. We have done it and we do not bother whether the Government falls or not." The Panthers Party leaders were critical of the tug of war between the PDP and the Congress, two major coalition partners, over the issue of demilitarisation in Jammu and Kashmir. While the PDP wanted withdrawal of troops from within the state the Congress has opposed it tooth and nail. The Panthers Party leadership believed that as a result of this tussle the state was in the midst of political crisis which had affected the progress in development works. Prof. Bhim has communicated in writing to UPA Chairperson and AICC Chief,Ms Sonia Gandhi, about his decision to withdraw the support to the Congress led coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir.
