Chink in the Armour: coalition on wet pitch with JKNPP’s withdrawal notice
JKNPP to take up matter within its executive meet on June 24-the D-Day

Jammu June 17
Different ideologies and regional politics projected by various alliance partners and riding on specific regional aspirations in polls-2002 have now become a root cause of bickering within the coalition. Alleging discrimination with Jammu and failure to implement CMP, the Chairman JKNPP Bhim Singh has decided to call on Sonia Gandhi chairperson UPA to apprise her with his decision of withdrawal from coalition.
The formal warning about the withdrawal from coalition on May 28 by none other but the Chairman Bhim Singh himself has brought to light that all is not well in coalition. Alleging discrimination with Jammu and harping anti- national tunes of demilitarization and revocation of AFSPA, Bhim Singh informed this. Bhim asked Congress to tame the PDP otherwise his party will reconsider its support to coalition. ‘The final decision will be taken in a party meeting being dotted on June 24, he had informed. It is also reported that chairman JKNPP is likely to handover a 26-point letter written to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
While some Jammuites questioned the seriousness of this warning from JKNPP but some opined that though this withdrawal would not affect coalition it will create a clear indicative line of Jammu v/s Kashmir battle started since 1947. Though the battle is on since November 2005, driving the state politics on regional basis with the National Conference, People's Democratic Party and other Valley based parties on the one side and the BJP, Congress and the Panthers Party on the other. Even the coalition members and party workers are highlighting specific tenures dividing the coalition tenure from 2002 –05 and onwards and accrediting their parties.
It is a known fact that the stand of PDP leadership on its demand of ‘reduction of troops and the revocation of AFSPA’ and recent Kashmir based parties unanimity over the ‘lion’s share’ in Assembly seats, to keep their dominance has undoubtedly created a wedge among the mainstream political parties of both the regions –the Jammu and the Kashmir- leaving the politicians in Ladakh watching the happenings carefully to see which way the wind blows.
Some people in Jammu having a close affinity to state politics and who are keeping tab on it opined the demilitarization would be a "total surrender" to secessionist elements who just wanted to give militants an upper hand and added that the proponent of this are unnecessarily fomenting tension in the state by making such "anti-national" demands and creating a poll like situations.
Kashmir based parties stand on granting of rights to PoK and other refugees, including West Pak refugees, has drawn a new battle line between Valley based politicians and Jammu based leaders. Referring to this issue, CPM leader M Y Tarigami argued that it could be revised only after a final solution of the Kashmir issue, meaning they have to wait for another half a century. While Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Harshdev Singh has stressed it would be better if we keep few seats, say eight, for the refugees who have come from PoK.
However, there is a common feeling emerging in general public that the Kashmir base parties are afraid that any advantage in number of seats to Jammu and granting rights to refugees could spike its chances of political resurgence in the next assembly elections in 2008 and thus they are opposing the issues.
