| Police ‘probing’ Al-Qaeda connections | | |
Jammu, June 18: With top security brasses completing ruling out Al-Qaeda presence in Jammu and Kashmir, the authorities are now looking for the plotter of Osama connection to understand the wider Jehadi game plan. In the past week Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and GoC—n-C Northern Command Lt Gen HS Panag –one after the other rules out Al-Qaeda presence in Jammu and Kashmir. Though the Home Secretary put himself on a little cautious footing as he said that “the case needs to be probed”, the other two described the Al-Qaeda theory as mischievous. Unable to say anything contrary to their bosses, the Jammu and Kashmir Police is not quite ready to rule out Al-Qaeda connections. Officers in the state Police are of the opinion that there may or may not be Al-Qaeda presence in Kashmir, but surfacing of CDs and literature can not be brushed aside as merely a mischievous act. A senior Police Officer who preferred anonymity, told EARLY TIMES, “the Al-Qaeda CDs have reference about the United Jehad Council and always it is Syed Salahuddin who reacts to even cursory reports of Al-Qaeda….this connection has something serious”. He said, something definite must be going on between Al-Qaeda and the United Jehad Council which is inviting reactions and counter-reactions every time. The Officer said that Police are investigating the linkages. “We are of first opinion that there is wider Jehadi game plan behind all this”, pointed out the Officer. When asked what exactly it could be, the Officer said, “it is quite premature to say anything but our investigation will soon reveal”. Meanwhile, sources said there are a lot of contradictions in the CD statement. The filed investigations have reportedly revealed that the circulation of the CD was simply an attempt at confusing the security agencies and at causing scare among people.
