| State Intelligence, Police find no evidence of Al | | | Jammu,June 18 While the IB is yet to complete its investigation in the recent circulation of a compact disc carrying a statement from Al Qaeda Chief in India,Abu Abdul Rehman Al-Ansari,in which he had announced Jehad against India, the state intelligence agencies, after their probe in the matter, have found no evidence to the presence of Al Qeda in Kashmir. Official sources said today "we have found a number of contradictions in the CD statement. Our field investigations revealed that the circulation of the CD was simply an attempt at confusing the security agencies and at causing scare among people." The sources said that neither the police nor the intelligence sleuths found any evidence to the Al Qaeda claim that 1000 copies of the CD had been distributed in mosques across Kashmir which established that some militant outfit had been behind the prepartion of the CD.The sources said that had there been Al Qeda presence in Kashmir atleast one or two of its activists would have fallen in the net of the security forces. The claim of the state intelligence agency was endorsed by the GOC-in-Chief,Northern Command,Lt.Gen. H.S.Panag who told mediamen today that "though Indian intelligence agencies have yet to complete investigation in the circulation of Al Qeda CD we have not found any presence of Al Qaeda in the state."He said that several years ago one Afghan militant operating in Jammu and Kashmir had been linked to Al Qaeda but later it was established that he did not belong to the outfit. One senior police officer said that since the rise of militancy in Kashmir rebel outfits went on mushrooming and a stage came where the state had over 100 outfits. This was followed by mergers and winding up of shops by some militant groups and there were not more than six outfits operating in Jammu and Kashmir at present.Besides this militant outfits keep on changing their nomenclature.Citing instances he said that Lashkar-i-Toiba is an offshoot of Harkatul Ansar amd reports suggest that Lashkar-i-Toiba was changing its name to Kashmir Freedom Force
