| DDC reviews anti-flood, rescue measures | | Asks officers to girdle the lions | |
SAMBA, JUNE 18 District Development Commissioner Mr. B.S. Jamwal today asked the officers to evolve an effective mechanism for prompt implementation of anti-flood and rescue measures in Samba tehsil in view of ensuing rainy season. The DDC was chairing a meeting convened to discuss the anti-flood measures needs to be taken up during rainy season. He asked the officers and officials at all levels to girdle the lions to meet any eventuality that can arise due to flash floods and rains during coming monsoon. He assured them every manual and mechanic help to supplement their efforts in this regard. Mr. Jamwal instructed the concerned authorities to constitute a sub-committee to identify new prone areas and also to visit the already identified vulnerable sites so that standby arrangements could be ensured accordingly. The committee will comprise officers from Army, Police, Border Security Force and Flood Control. The meeting informed that the main control room will be established at Divisional office Samba with phone number 243248 besides making available such camps at other prominent places. This main control room will be functional from 1st July 2007 round the clock and will keep complete liaison with Army, Police, BSF and other concerned agencies to serve the people in a more efficient manner. Likewise, supervisory parties for river Devak, Basanter and local nallahs of district Jammu shall be headquartered at Samba to take appropriate precautions when required. The DDC asked the army to keep available sufficient number of trucks, tents and manpower to fight out the situation. He directed the Revenue authorities to issue timely warning to the population besides ensuring their evacuation to safer places. The police has been asked to ensure wireless facilities during floods so that no communication gap will hamper the relief and rescue operations. The Medical department has been directed to keep ready sufficient stock of medicines besides the Food & Supplies department has been asked to ensure all essential commodities to the people. The meeting also asked for installation of dewatering pump at Harijan Basti Samba besides keeping 2 dewatering pumps reserved to meet any emergency. Other issues deliberated upon included accommodation for affected people, protection bunds, labour availability and related anti-flood measures. Second-in-Command 6 Gorkha Rifles, Second-in-Command 91 Bn, BSF, Tehsildar, Chairman MC, Executive Engineers, Flood Control, PHE, Mechanical Irrigation, R.C.C Division II L/C Hiranagar, BDO, AEE’s, AEs and JEs attended the meeting.
