| Birju Maharaj steals the show | | | Jammu June 18 Six day long national convention being held on the occasion of its 30th anniversary by SPIC-MACAY in association with University of Jammu opened here today with the performance of Birju Maharaj. Pandit Birju Maharaj (Padam Vibhushan) spell bound the audience with his scintillating Kathak performance. Amidst the big applauds the veteran dancer like a wizard kept the audience glued to their seats under a spell. All eyes were focused to the centre stage of the platform at Zorawar Singh Auditorium of Jammu University in a pin drop silence. The show also marked the enthralling performance from none else but the Padam Shri Parveen Sultana who also stole the show by giving her first ever performance. Her absorbing and fascinating performance reduced the audience merely to statuettes fixed to their spots. Earlier in the welcome address Amita Malhotra , Cultural Secretary apprised the audience with the functioning and the programmes undertaken in hands by SPIC MACAY to promote the cultural and traditional music. Shaswati, student of Birju Maharaj gave a brief life sketch of the Padam Vibhushan Pt Birju Maharaj who has been an ambassador to India cutting across the physical boundaries of across the globe and making Kathak known to the people who were aware of only western dances. Official spokesperson Neelu Rohmetra Convener Committee for Press and Publicity SPIC MACAY stated that since its inception in 1977 the SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) is dedicated to conserve and promote awareness of rich and cultural kaleidoscope amongst the youth with a focus upon the Indian classical and traditional arts.
