| Martyr's son held for loot | | | AHMEDABAD June 22: The military police of the cantonment area of Ahmedabad had little to celebrate after nabbing a 16-year-old boy who had committed over five thefts in the area in the last five months. The teenager, a class X student, is the son of a Kargil martyr, who died during Operation Vijay at the Tiger hills. "Even though he is the son of a martyr, we had to arrest him and hand him over to the local Shahibaug police station officials," said Naik M A Hasim of 11 infantry, PRO unit. Police sub-inspector of Shahibaug police station M F Chowdhry said the teenager, staying near the cantonment area, had been on the prowl for the last five months. "He always targeted locked quarters and bungalows. His modus operandi was to enter the premises either through the ventilators or by breaking in through the backyard doors," said Chowdhry. Police sources said they have recovered some part of the stolen booty amounting to Rs 44,000 from the boy. "He had even stolen an ATM card and had been regularly withdrawing cash through different centres," said police. Preliminary interrogation revealed that trouble started for the family after they received compensation for the martyrdom in Kargil. "The family, then based in Uttar Pradesh, started receiving calls from extortionists demanding Rs 10 lakh, threatening to kidnap their children," said police. The family then shifted to a relatives place at Ahmedabad. But here too the family faced tough times as their only son resorted to burglary for maintaining a lavish lifestyle. "We are hunting for the receiver of the stolen goods. His name has surfaced during interrogation of the accused and will be soon behind bars," Chowdhry said
