| Locals clash with police, JMC staff | | DSP among 15 injured 87 kanals of state land vacated | | Jammu, June 25: At least fifteen persons including a deputy superintendent of police were injured in a clash between police and group of Gujjars over land dispute in Majalata are of Jammu, this morning. The injured Cops have been identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP HQS) Mehmood Ahmad Khan and constables Chain Singh, Rashid Ahmad and Ramesh Lal. The police along with the officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation and Revenue officials had gone to vacate the state land measuring eighty seven Kanals (87) under illegal occupation of 15 Gujjar Families, sources said. "However, illegal occupants resort to stone pelting when police try to evict them", they added. About three government vehicle including official Car bearing number JK02M-8080 of Municipal Commissioner also suffered damaged during the clash. "The land was transferred to Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) for construction of cattle Shed and Pond", a revenue official said, adding that the Gujjar families were not vacating the land. The decision to handover the said land for construction of cattle pond to Jammu Municipal Corporation was taken at a high level meeting headed by divisional commissioner Jammu, claimed sources. Sources quoting eye witnesses said that soon after the officials of revenue and JMC headed by Deputy Commissioner Jammu and Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma along with police party reached the spot they were stopped by the Gujjars. They said "police personnel's numbering twenty to twenty five led By DSP (HQs) Jammu who had come for vacating the land which has allegedly been occupied by some Gujjar families", a local resident said adding that the angry mob attacked them with lathes and pelted stones on them which led to a clash between the two. Giving details Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma said that about 87 kanals of land was transferred to Jammu Municipality by revenue department for the construction of Cattle Pond. He said that the land was occupied by some Gujjar families and had even raised some temporary tent like structures on it. "Despite repeated attempts the employees of JMC were not allowed to fence the land", he said adding that today when the employees of Corporation who were accompanied by the Police and revenue officials reached the site for fencing, the people of the area start stone pelting on them. "To fence the land was not possible without the assistance of police and civil administration", he said adding the fencing was going on with police deployed at the site. He said several persons including a police officer were injured; adding police had to fire few shots in air to disperse the mob. Police has arrested some female members of the community and gave a rough deal to them, alleges a local Gujjar, adding that the land in question was under the legal occupation of community members from the last several years and about fifteen families were living on the land.
