| SECURITY FORCES, MILITANTS SHOW OF STRENGTH ON AUGUST 14, 15 | | | Srinagar/Jammu August 10 :- Judge by the reports that militant groups were planning to register their presence on August 14(Pakistan's Independence Day) and August 15(India's Independence Day) these two days were going to be a show of strength between the security forces and the rebels in the Kashmir valley. The recent seizure of explosive fitted pressure cooker along with a gas cylinder on the airport road, according to the police, was part of the plan of carrying out major blasts either on August 15 or a couple of days ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. A senior police officer said that additional companies of security forces have been deployed in various areas of the valley for preventing militants from making a show of their strength. He said as part of the plan to foil rebel plans for kicking up violence checking of vehicles and frisking of passengers had been intensified. He said that instructions had been given to security forces to ensure that militant groups neither succeeded in organising parades in farflung areas while trying to celebrate Pakistan's Independence day nor were able to stage black flag demonstrations on August 15. Official sources said that in order to meet any eventuality the Army has been asked to stand by.According to these sources,the weeklong sanitisation programme of all the spots,where the independence day functions were being held,would continue till the morning of August 15. In Jammu division alert has been sounded across the border districts in Rajouri, Poonch to intensify night patrolling in villages falling near line of control following fresh reports of infiltration bids by militants from across the line of control. The security forces in Doda have been tasked to keep a close watch on the activities of Special police officers and surrendered militants in the wake of recent arrests of police cops having links with LeT in the run up to the I-Day celebrations. Meanwhile, the security grid deployed along the Udhampur-Pathankot railway track and 300 km Jammu-Srinagar National highway has also been alerted to carry out regular checking of railway track,vehicles and frisking of passengers to thwart plans of major strike. Airport security was also being reviewed ahead of I-day celebrations. Security has been further beefed up across all other sensitive locations including Railway station, bus stations and busy markets and round the clock vigil was maintained, checking of vehicles across various nakas put up across the city was going on.
