6/26/2007 11:48:11 PM

Jammu, June 26,
Jammuites on Tuesday relished plates full of fresh vegetables and fruits and heaved a sigh of relief as fruit and vegetable traders called off their strike on Monday, resumed today routine business activity in the Narwal market thereby bringing down rates of seasonal vegetables and fruits significantly.

The people across the city were facing many hardships for past several days as scarcity of vegetable supply has emboldened local vendors to indulge in building stocks leading to widening gap between the demand and the supply.

Reports of indefinite strike call given by the traders association to register their protest against the implementation of Agriculture produce Market act and hike of two percent market fee also added fuel to the fire and prices skyrocketed.

Local vendors in housing colonies and old city areas have started black marketing their stock to earn more profit. In the absence of any fool proof mechanism to check black marketing the business went well for two days but on Tuesday the prices of vegetables and fruits were marginally reduced easing out burden on the pockets of common man.

On Monday the traders association staged a protest demonstration against the state government forcing the intermediaries to diffuse the crisis emerging out of the deadlock between the two parties.

Following truce, the Narwal market witnessed hectic business activity since early morning. “We are happy that Narwal market is limping back to normalcy and peaking gradually. The past one week has affected our business prospects as everyone here in the market was concerned as regard impact of the government order, Ashwani Sharma a farmer from Marh block said.
“I am happy to see large rush of customers in the market after a gap of two days,Arun Kumar a business man said adding that the business activity was at its peak on Tuesday .He said the fresh stock of vegetables which reached Narwal market since early morning was traded early bringing back smile on the faces of farmers fearing loss of business owing to three day strike.
The street vendors also did a brisk business as people came out of their houses in large number to purchase fresh vegetable and fruit.Today we will cook our choicest dishes as all the vegetables are available in the market, a housewife in Trikuta Nagar area Rajni Sharma said feeling relaxed that finally she had a choice to select her menu for the dinner
