Srinagar, June 26
- With India being one of the few countries in the world where malnutrition of children is alarmingly high, Union Minster of State for Women and Child Development Mrs. Renuka Choudhary admitted that, in case of Jammu and Kashmir, the available statistical data reflect a healthy picture with levels of malnutrition among Jammu and Kashmir children being very low.
Echoing Mrs. Choudhary's views, Minister for Social Welfare Haji Nissar Ali said that all parameters defining the welfare of society have improved considerably in the state since coalition government took over. "Our focus and emphasis is directed to improve the socio-economic condition of destitute, abandoned, disabled and economically poor sections of the society", Haji said and stressed on the Union Minister to show more magnanimity by doling out more funds for better implementation of the existing schemes and extending the cover of benefits to more people.
Renuka Choudhary and her counterpart from the state Mr. Haji Nissar while interacting in a meeting here, the other day maintained that if the country has to join the league of developed nations then the condition of the sections of society at the lower level has to be improved.
Officers from various departments affiliated with the union ministry and social welfare officers from the state including Chairman Social Advisory Board Mr. G. M. Saroori and Chief Secretary Mr. C. Phunsog attended the meeting.
Choudhary assured the state Minister that centre will continue to provide funds for implementation of the schemes so that maximum results are achieved. Regarding the construction of anganwari centres, the Minister informed that now the structures would be built by the Rural Development ministry and added that members of parliament could also utilize their funds for this purpose. She stressed the social welfare department to maintain quality in terms of academic qualifications, physical and mental health in recruitment of anganwari workers so that they are able to show better results.
