At 288 Panthers support Shekhawat
6/27/2007 12:07:18 AM

Jammu, June 26: Whether it is a issue pertaining to a Gram Panchayat, Home State, or the national political debate, the Panthers Party of Prof Bhim Singh just can holds itself back from an active participation –this time they are making their presence felt as country warms up to elect next President.
Contrary to the general mood of the nation, barring BJP and its allies, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party today said it will support the Presidential bid of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who is contesting as an independent candidate.
Though Panthers Party is not a big political or legislature group to influence the elections of the President of India but still its four legislators can make difference. The Electoral College for the election of President of India is constituted by elected members of legislature but the value of vote for each state of different.
For Jammu and Kashmir, the value of the vote of each legislator is 72 and total value –in the House of 87 –is 6200. The Panthers Party with its four legislators can cast 288 votes. If the election is keenly contested, which is not very likely, the 288 votes can make a different in electing next President of India.
"JKNPP has already severed ties with the Congress-led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir and was of the firm opinion that the present constitutional and other related problems and issues could be better addressed by electing Shekhawat for this highest constitutional office," a statement issued by party MLA and leader Harshdev Singh said.
He said that the chairman of JKNPP Bhim Singh had already said that Shekhawat was most suited to lead the nation.
