Amarnath Yatra: thousands perform darshan ahead of schedule
6/27/2007 11:14:47 PM

Jammu, June 27

After halting Amarnath pilgrimage owing to bad weather conditions via Baltal the authorities on Wednesday allowed thousands of pilgrims to move further and perform darshan of the Shiv lingam at the Amarnath cave shrine amid tight security arrangements.
Though the yatra is scheduled to begin on June 30 but according to reports reaching here from base camps in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, between 15-20,000 pilgrims stranded due to bad weather conditions at Baltal were allowed to proceed to the cave shrine on Wednesday.
The authorities had earlier halted the yatra following worsening of weather conditions along the yatra track.
The official sources said majority of pilgrims including family members of security personnel and other VIP’s prefer to trek ahead of the scheduled yatra programme in order to enjoy the hospitality and VIP arrangements enroute yatra track.
This year also the trend is showing no signs of change as several security agencies are busy organising visits of their senior officers along with their close relatives and freinds ridiculing efforts on the part of the shrine borad authorities to channelise the yatra.
Experts keeping track of the melting of the ice shiv lingam inside the cave shrine from over past several years observe that despite stringent measures in place, rush of VIP groups does affect the rate of melting down of natural lingam as these people resort to use of pooja material banned otherwise inside the cave shrine. Meanwhile in Jammu and Srinagar elaborate security arrnagements were finalised ahead of the official date of start of yatra from June 30 and MA stadium is all decked up to welcome the yatris
