War against corruption…wah, wah!!!
Sacked officer is PDP's state secretary
6/27/2007 11:25:34 PM

NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
Jammu, June 27: What describes best the war against corruption has left the common man confused. Whether the present Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's jehad against corruption is real or that of his predecessor Mufti Mohammad Sayeed?
The public servant accused of corrupt practices and misappropriation of official authorities have been equally punished and rehabilitated by both. The differences is that those officers pulled by Mufti were rehabilitated by Azad and the others penalised by Azad are being politically propped up by Mufti.
It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's much publicised "war against corruption" is a loud campaign, but his predecessor Mufti's jehad against corrupt practices was still louder. The officers terminated from services on charges of corruption during Mufti's tenure were three times higher than those sacked during Azad's tenure. Mufti had terminated 60 government officers in three batches of 20 each.
The most famous or infamous case during Mufti's tenure was the prosecution of top IAS officer Ajit Kumar in the jute mat scam. And the most publicised case of war against corruption during Azad's tenure has been the termination of then Director Rural Development Kashmir, Syed Asghar Hussain.
Syed Asghar Hussain, belonging to an influential political and spiritual family of Kishtwar found himself in middle of a raging controversy in 2005 in a case pertaining to rural electrification in Kashmir when he was Director Rural Development. The case was so high profile that he was a co-accused with the then Minister for Rural Development and now School Education, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed.
The controversy, by every passing day went too deep that the then Additional Advocate General was filmed while allegedly accepting favours for saving Syed Asghar's skin.
Nothing however could prevent the inevitable. Syed Asghar was sacked on August 15 last year.
The common public which have been equally supporting the efforts of both Mufti and Azad in eradicating corruption from public life may be surprised to know that both Ajit Kumar and Syed Asghar Hussain have been rehabilitated properly.
While during first few decisions in the cabinet after Ghulam Nabi Azad took over as Chief Minister, the suspended IAS officer, who had been even jailed in the jute mat scam, Ajit Kumar was honourably reinstated. Interestingly, he was not reinstated but also properly rehabilitated as J&K's Coordination Commissioner in New Delhi.
Few people may be knowing that Syed Asghar who was terminated by Azad, joined the Peoples Democratic Party in next few months. His joining PDP was a high profile function held in the presence of party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Interestingly, Asghar has today been made State Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party. The nomination was today made by party president Mehbooba Mufti. Even if it is not mentioned here, it is understood that by virtue of the post of State Secretary he will be invitee to party Working Committee –the decision making body. He is also being projected as party candidate for Kishtwar assembly segment.
And still the war against corruption goes on but it is not clear who is true and who is wrong.
