| Governor joins Hemis Mela, visits Khardungla | | | LEH JUNE 27 - Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha has exuded confidence that Hemis Mela will emerge as a major attraction in Ladakh given the response of the domestic and foreign tourists. Interacting with the Chief Monk and a larger number of people while participating in the Mela, the Governor said that four decades ago it used to be a very limited event with only locals celebrating the festivity but of late it has turned out to be a big event. Russian Ambassador in IndiaVyachesiav Turbinkov was among the prominent who joined the colorful Mela in which hundreds of Ladakhis, in their traditional attire, performed and enthralled the people. General Sinha, who had visited the Gumpa for the first time in 1966, appreciated the people of Ladakh for celebrating the event in traditional spirit and in accordance with the composite culture of the State. He hoped that the message of Lord Budha for peace, non violence and tranquility will inspire the people to live in complete harmony. The Governor assured the Chief Monk and the people that the State Government and the Army would make all out efforts in promoting Hemis Mela as a major tourist attraction, which will give boost to the local economy. Besides locals, a large number of home and foreign tourists were present on the occasion as the surroundings were humming with gaiety and festivity. The Governor also visited Khardungla, the highest motorable pass at 18200 feet and interacted with all ranks of the Army. He was very happy to see the high morale of the troops.
