| Army-media discuss human rights at Baramulla | | | Baramulla, June 27 A seminar on Human Rights was organized by 19 infantry Division Baramulla, in which Director General investigations National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), both top and lower rung army officers deployed in different areas and two renowned media personalities of Kashmir valley participated. Speaking on the occasion Indian Express Kashmir Bureau Chief Muzamil Jaleel said that human rights violation in the Kashmir has been part of ongoing violence but the violation committed by security personnel at various occasions have certainly damaged the army's credibility which the army otherwise tried to build by carrying out different people friendly operations. He said, "At times army tries to become police and some times the police tries to become army while carrying out counter insurgency operations in the valley." adding that there has been a communication gap between army and people due to language barrier as most of troopers are not familiar with Kashmiri language. Another senior journalist presently associated with 'The Hindu' as Jammu and Kashmir Bureau chief, Sujat Bukhari said the incidents like yesterdays of Bandipora certainly tells upon the credibility and image of army despite the corrective measures. Pointing towards the recent row over renovation of a mosque by army, he said that when army has done public welfare deeds everybody appreciate them but at same time when it took renovation of the mosque in hand not taking religious sentiments of people into account that certainly provoke resentments. Various army officials criticized the credibility of local media saying that it at times report in biased manner but during the question answer session local Media persons raised seek their support to them while they are trying to cover the truth. The seminar was aimed at to address two key issues that are the imperative need to uphold the customs and norms of Human Rights in a democratic society and legislative aspects controlling the deployment of armed force visa-viz Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. 1990 including the need for the adherence of Human Rights while the armed forces are operating in counter insurgency situations as prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir. While talking to media persons, 15 crops commander Major General S.A Sakhoon said, "In Bandipora incident a high level inquiry has been ordered, those found guilty would be dealt with law of land." |
