Badipore episode: PDP, NC set for race to politicize issue
6/29/2007 12:28:24 AM

Jammu June 28
Following the Bandipore episode, political parties the PDP and NC in particular, have set for the race to gain the political mileage out of the incident. Both the parties have condemned the incident in strong words. However, what they forgot is that the both have been campaigning for ‘clemency for Afzal Guru’ – the main accused in Parliament attack giving plea of human rights, some irefully said.
Some political observes observed that an apt hand in K-politics Mufti who is known for his swimming against the current has timely struck the string – the demilitarization and the Bandipore episode substantiates that he had won his stakes. They said cutting across the party lines both the PDP and the NC had raised hue and cry for human rights of Afzal Guru and his family and asked for the “clemency for Guru’ who was sentenced to death for being proved convicted in the Parliament Attack.
The duo posing themselves as crusaders of human rights seemingly adopted double standards. While for Afzal Guru they harped for clemency and warned of dire consequences if Guru was hanged, on the other hand they dared not to utter the highhandedness of locals who took law in their hands. ‘In their condemnations they didn’t dare to condemn the taking of law in their hand just keeping in view that vote bank may slip out of their hands. Both parties seemingly had justified the people’s act which could only trigger more hatred between the two components civil society and army, some observed.
Taking advantage of the situation National Conference spokesman charging upon coalition government have stated that people have lost faith on the coalition partners whom they voted to power as they got nothing without false claims of Congress and Peoples Democratic Party the major partners of the government. Making the Bandipore incident a cue, he said that the net result of their claims can be judged from yesterday's incident of Bandipora, where security forces dare to molest a teenaged Kashmiri girl. "Where is the peace and dignity?", he questioned targeting the PDP and asked it not to further befool people on the name of healing touch?
While Mufti standing on the same pitch sharply reacted to the incident saying grave human rights violations must be probed to bring the culprits to book, this ugly phenomenon necessitates the urgency of withdrawing the armed forces from the civilian areas and revocation of AFSPA that gives immunity to the troops indulging in such crimes.
Though Muftis and Abdullahs may not have been an eyewitness to the incident but have condemned the incident like parroting the words as were quoted by the people during the TV footage, they added. Adding to it further the political analysts feel both parties have all set to gain a cutting edge over the main political rival Congress and will certainly flare the emotions of people to show down the Congress in the future polls for holding it responsible for not granting civil security.
However some like Brita Ram an ex serviceman remarked, ‘But PDP and NC have not bothered. Their exaggerated statements in this regard will certainly put pressure upon the investigating agencies, even they had not given it a second thought perhaps the girl might have cried seeing strangers at her door and have waited for the outcome of the police and departmental inquiry.’ Instead of flaring the emotions these political leaders should have asked the people to maintain calm. But, both have indulged in mudslinging against their political rivals, they added.
