Srinagar, June 28
Army and police today claimed to have foiled a fidayeen attack when it gunned down three foreign militants in a fierce gun battle in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

A girl was also killed in the cross fire between the army and militants. However, local residents staged a protest demonstration in the town alleging that the girl was deliberately shot dead by the troopers.

Official sources said that three foreign militants were gunned down by the security forces after an encounter, while the girl died when she was caught in the cross fire.

Giving details of the encounter, an official spokesman told News Agency of Kashmir that 41 RR and SOG laid an ambush on Hyhama-Kupwara road, this morning, afternoon after receiving information that a group of fidayeen are planning to attack 28 DIV Headquarters at Shalkote a few kilometers away from District headquarters Kupwara.

Troops intercepted a Maruti van (JK03-5941) on its way from Hyhama to Kupwara on the outskirts of the town and asked its passengers to get down for frisking, sources said adding "However, three militants traveling in the van opened fire on the troops in an attempt to escape".

The fire, they said, was returned and in the ensuing gun battle all the three militants were gunned down.

A girl, identified as Fahmida daughter of Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Malik of Kupwara was also injured in the cross fire and was rushed to local hospital, where she breathed her last.

Police said that the identification of the slain militants was yet to be ascertained, however, they were believed to be foreigners.

The driver of the van was arrested and handed over to police. Operation was in progress, when the last report came in.

Soon after the reports of death of the girl spread in the two, residents of the area came on the road and staged a massive protest demonstration. Reports from the area revealed that within half an hour all the shopkeepers downed their shutter and large number of people assembled outside the hospital.

Shouting slogans against government and security forces protestors alleged that the girl was deliberately killed by the security forces. They demanded an independent probe in the killing of the girl
