| Assam: 2 women killed in mortar attack by B'desh Rifles | | |
Silchar, Aug 10 : Two women were killed when the Bangladesh Rifles fired mortars at Assam's Cachar district today even as 3,000 villagers fled their homes following exchanges of fire between border guards of the two countries, BSF officials said.
The women, Sabita Dey and Santa Dey, died when their home at Harinagar Part four village was hit by mortars fired by the Bangladesh Rifles, which had recently massed troops along the border, the officials said.
The BDR attacked two outposts of the Border Security Force at Harinagar-Kinnarkal in Cachar district and Tukergram in Karimganj district last night, the officials said.
The BSF retaliated and firing between the border guards of the two countries continued in the Cachar-Karimganj sector till seven am this morning, they said.
Following the firing, nearly 3,000 residents of Harinagar, Kinarkhal and Tukergram villages fled their homes in panic, they said.
The administration of Cachar and Karimganj districts has opened a relief camp for the villagers at Siddheswar high school.
This is the second incident of firing by the BDR since June 28, when there were skirmishes along the border over the occupation of about 220 acres on the Indian side of the border by Bangladeshi cultivators. |
