As per the schedule of the yatra, the two month long pilgrimage was expected to begin from June 30. However, reports from Amarnath shrine reaching here suggest that large number of pilgrims were performing darshan at the cave shrine for past several weeks puncturing tall claims of the yatra auhtorities and exposing the level of coordination among various state govt agencies looking after the arrangements. The decision to halt the yatra from Jammu base camp was taken by the state government after receiving reports that due to incessant rain along the yatra route portions of muddy track had been washed away making it a slippery and unfit to trek for pilgrims. A vital bridge near Gund in Ganderbal district was also washed away following flash floods late Thursday evening forcing authorities at the base camp to stop forward movement of yatris traveling in heavy vehicles. Inspector General of Police Jammu range after reviewing yatra arrangements today said that due to bad weather conditions the official date of yatra has been postponed adding that no yatra will be allowed to move from Jammu base camp on saturday. On the other hand, a senior police officer posted in Baltal said that following washing away of portions of vital bridge near Gund we have closed down the road for heavy traffic and only movement of light motor vehicles was allowed on Friday for some time after border road organization men managed to repair some damaged portions. Meanwhile, heavy rush of sadhus have started arriving in Jammu and elaborate arrnangements have been made to accomodate them in different community halls and dharamshalas besides providing them free transport service on SRTC buses.
