| Mercury dips after heavy rains in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 14 : Mercury witnessed a drop again after heavy rains lashed Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where life came to a halt for about an hour last evening. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be scattered rain or thundershowers in Jammu and Kashmir in the evening today. However, fairly widespread rain is predicted during the next 24 hours, he said. After recording near or above normal maximum and minimum temperature during the past 48 hours, mercury dropped again due to rain and cloudy sky accompanied by winds during the past 24 hours. Pahalgam, a famous health resort in south Kashmir recorded lowest minimum temperature in the valley. Against yesterday's 8 degrees minimum temperature, it was 6. 5 degrees, 1. 5 degree below normal. Recording 12. 8 mm rainfall during the night, the minimum temperature witnessed a drop at Gulmarg and settled at 6. 8 degrees, more than two notches below normal. However, both the places witnessed heavy rush of local and outside the state tourists as today was the last Sunday before the commencement of holy month of Ramzan. A met spokesman said Qazigund, Kokernag and Kupwara recorded 11. 5 degrees minimum temperature which was two to three degree below normal. After recording a notch below normal maximum temperature yesterday, life came to a halt in Srinagar last evening due to heavy rain and hailstorm for about an hour, disrupting traffic and pedestrian movement as many roads were flooded with rain water. The minimum temperature also witnessed a drop after recording 6. 2 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs. Against yesterday's minimum temperature of 15. 5 degrees it was 13 degrees, two notches below normal. The spokesman said, ''there is a possibility of rain or thundershowers in the city during the next 24 hours, as result the mercury will remain below normal. He said the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 22 degrees and 10 degrees respectively tomorrow. Leh recorded more than three degrees increase in the minimum temperature against yesterday's 8 degrees while there was a slight increase at Kargil where against yesterday's 8. 2 degrees minimum temperature it was 8. 6 degrees. He said generally cloudy sky is predicted at Leh where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 degrees and 9 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours. At Jammu there is possibility of light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 33 degrees and 22 degrees respectively. |
