| Hide and seek with Dogri | | Dogri probing grounds at its native land losses grounds to English and Hindi | | Sanjay Khajuria Jammu, June 30 Despite inclusion of the Dogri language in the eighth Schedule of Indian Constitution, the essence of Dogri is thinning around among the Dogra families who still prefer to communicate in Hindi or English. The reason being simple - people feel proud to be a Dogra but feel shy to speak Dogri. If remembered it was a historical day on December 22 in 2003, when mother tongue of Dogras- the Dogri language was inducted in the eighth scheduled of the Indian Constitution. Following the historical occasion many cultural and social organizations; even political parties had then celebrated the movement proudly. But after almost over three years have passed the Dogras increasingly seem to loose their relationship with their mother tongue. While the Gen X in the Dogra land is running behind the Western culture joining crash courses for English-speaking to be ‘attention seekers’ and to mark a dominance in the career interviews. ‘Not only in schools, colleges, Jammu University and offices but even at home, Gen X is seemed more concerning about is accent in English than for Dogri. ‘Even new generation in Dogra families is not aware of their mother tongue and they use the Dogri words in a amalgamated manner with Hindi and English making it funnier than it sweetness for which its known, said Diwakar Sharma resident of Partap Garh Mohalla. “This is the time of competition and TV and media is responsible for the Westernization of the Dogra children”, said Rakesh Anand an acknowledged instrumentalist. “Every parent feels proud when his or her child speaks in English, but it reflects opposite on them when their child speaks in Dogri (his conversation translated from Dogri),” he claimed. Every year many Dogri writers, singers, artists and intellectuals point out the neglect on the part of the people especially the attitude of the parents who are responsible for the foundation of the child for his or her mother tongue and thus the position of Dogri language is on low ebbs. Nami Dogri Sanstha, president, Dogra Dr Harish Kaila also blamed the pseudo modern social set up for the unrecognition of Dogri at the hands of people and admitted that Dogri language is losing its magnetism and charisma among Dogra’s. He said that it is a fact that Dogri Language only highlights in the Dogri functions but it forgets by the Dogras at their homes. “Dogri subject should be introduce as a compulsory subject from class 1st in all the schools of Jammu”, he emphasized. Majority of people underlined the inclination of Gen X towards saying ‘as far as the inclination towards English is concerned one needs to secure a place in the modern competitive era and the English assures you the place.” ‘Though we don’t hate to speak Dogri Speaking English has become a compulsion, they added. “The time has changed and English language is the flavor of the time those who claim to be protagonist for Dogri are also looking for opportunities to get their wards admitted in public or private schools for better communicative English skills, said Anuradha Koul a Business executive.
