| Amarnath Yatra remains suspended | | |
SRINAGAR, JUNE 30 The Amarnath Yatra, which was scheduled to begin today, remained suspended due to incessant rains and could be resumed Sunday after reviewing the weather conditions, spokesman of Sri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) said today.
Pilgrims, who were supposed to start the yatra today and are stationed at Jammu, were not allowed to proceed to Pahalgam due to bad weather, he said.
Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha, who is Chairman of the board, also could not go to the cave shrine for the "Pratham Puja" (prayer for the commencement of the yatra).
Pahalgam and Baltal areas have been witnessing heavy and incessant rains since yesterday afternoon making the tracks slippery and dangerous.
As per the programme, five thousand pilgrims will be permitted every day to have darshan of the ice lingam, symbol of the lord shiva.
Elaborate arrangements have been made at all the halting points on the 14-kilometer track from Baltal and on the 46-km track from Pahalgam to the shrine including setting up of 74 gas geysers in tented and prefabricated hutment colonies.
A joint control room has been set up at Pahalgam base camp, while mini control rooms have been set up at various camping locations like Mir Bazar, Nunwan, Chandanwari, Zojipal, Pissu Top, Sheshnag, Mahaguns Top, Panjtarni and the holy cave, he said.
