| NC happy as PC decides against contesting 2008 polls | | |
Jammu, June 30 The announcement made by the chief of Peoples’Conference ,Sajjad Gani Lone ,not to participate in the 2008 Assembly polls has brought cheers on the faces of National conference leadership as they considered him a potential opponent in Kupwara district. Mr Lone made this announcement at a public rally in Handwara that his party will not “take part in the Assembly election till the Kashmir issue was resolved.” This announcement, according to informed sources, was music to the ears of National Conference leadership that had started seeing in the Peoples’Conference the potential for harming its voter support in Kupwara district. In 2002 Assembly poll the National Conference had bagged four out five seats in the Kupwara district, which includes Karnah,Kupwara,Lolab and Langate. It had lost the Handwara seat because Sofi Ghulam Mohiuddin, who had entered the poll fray as an independent candidate, received support from the vote bank of Peoples’Conference. The voters in Handwara have been traditional supporters of Mr Abdul Gani Lone, founder of Peoples’ Conference.Political analysts had observed that Mr Sofi,a almost a new comer, would have not defeated the National Conference stalwart,Ch.Mohd.Ramzan had he (Sofi) not been backed by the supporters of Peoples’conference. In that election Sajjad Lone had not issued any whip to the party supporters against casting their votes. Since the Peoples’Conference is well entrenched in Kupwara district besides having pockets of influence in Bandipore,Rafiabad and Khansahib constituencies Mr Lanoe’s announcement on nonparticipation in the election has seemingly gladdened the hearts of the National Conference leaders.(
