Puri concerned over HR violations
7/1/2007 12:07:51 AM

Jammu | June 30
Balraj Puri, Convenor People’s Union for Civil Liberties, (PUCL) has expressed serious concern over the growing human rights violations in different places in the state, including alleged attempt to rape of a young girl by army men at Bandipora, killing of three persons in fake encounter at Kupwara and killing of innocent civilians in Doda in a grenade attack by the militants.
Disapproving the use of force to evict Gujjars from the land on which they were settled for a long time, Puri said the best course would have to sort out the issue by holding negotiations with their representative and confront them with the legal evidence about the actual title over the land if the government had any.
While appreciating the action of the Police in arresting the guilty army men and the promise of the Army to court martial them, Puri wanted that that the guilty persons be tried by civil courts and an independent enquiry ordered to suggest long term measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
