| Patil does a diplomat! | | |
MUNISH GUPTA Jammu, July 1: Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who chaired a high level meeting in Srinagar Saturday to review security scenario played a perfect diplomatic role: Unlike the Defence Minister AK Antony, who rules out demilitarisation proposal ever day much to the chagrin of Peoples Democratic Party, Patil had different messages for different people. To keep the PDP and the supports of troop reduction in good humour he said, “such a move will be taken at appropriate time depending upon the ground situation. Therefore, therefore was no complete ruling out like Anotny who annoys the PDP almost every morning. For security forces and agencies the message of Patil was quite different: “Be tough in operations, don’t compromise on lowering guard”. Highly places sources who were privy to the meeting chaired by Patil said, hiked infiltration and the influx of terrorists through Line of Control were the focus of a meeting. The participating officers, representing different agencies, highlighted the fact that the level of infiltration is on the rise and militant activities were showing a considerable increase. After patiently hearing the participating officers, he asked them “to devise a strategy. Keep up the good work. We will see what can be done”. Sources said that security officers strongly opposed any move to reduce troop strength in any part of Jammu and Kashmir as they feared this could give the militants an advantage. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, sources said, was quite overwhelmed at the concern expressed by security officers against troop reduction move. It may mentioned here that Azad is staunch opponent of troop reduction proposal. Sources said, Azad acknowledged that the situation needed to be dealt with firmly but after ensuring that human rights were not violated.
