| BSNL stonewalls J&K | | Cellular, internet service out of gear | |
ET CORRESPONDENT Jammu, July 1: It was virtually a nightmarish weekend for all across Jammu and Kashmir; the business establishments ran into rough weather and those who can’t imagine staying out of touch found them at the receiving end of communication failure. As staying in touch with each other through telephone has become a part of modern life, the failure of service made one to feel like living in Stone Age. Worst sufferers still were the pilgrims of Amarnath shrine and Mata Vaishno Devi shrine as they lost contacts with their relatives due to snagging service of the largest cellular telephony provider the Bharat Sanchar Nigm Ltd (BSNL). For Amarnath pilgrims it was some thing like a trouble visiting them twice. On the one hand they were stranded due to inclement weather and bad roads and on the other hands their relatives back home could not get in touch with them. It all happened Friday evening when various BSNL services reported failures. Earlier, people thought that it was all due to overcrowded network but later it was learnt that there was some serious problems with the BSNL network. When contacted, the BSNL authorities could not explain any thing beyond trouble in the server. Till the filing of this report there was no word from the authorities on restoration of services. The problem crept in slowly before it could affect the entire system. First of all, late last afternoon, the BSNL broad band server went down thus throwing all internet operations out of gear. By evening cell phones refused to send the SMSs. And by late Friday evening, the prepaid mobile phone service was completely out of order. There was a visible panic and chaos among the prepaid cell phone users as service went out of order all of sudden. “With the advent of mobile telephone service we had got our land line phones disconnected to make some savings; by today’s failure we have realised that there should be an alternate service as well”, said Anoop Manhas of Sidhra who had travel all the way to Chhani Himmat to see his ailing uncle. “We were worried as no phone connection could be made”, he added. “Since Friday afternoon we have not been able to do any work and a dozen and half of our employees have been sitting idle”, said Jatin Mahajan who runs a web developing Solutions Company in Gandhi Nagar. The worst part of the story is that we do not have any idea of the restoration of the services, he added. The Public Call Offices (PCOs) in various parts of the city today witnessed long queues of Amarnath pilgrims desperate to make contact with their families back home. Banking and financial institutions too suffered a heavy loss due to communication failure. While most of the nationalised banks could not clear their bulk transactions, the visitors to the Automated Teller Machines had to return empty handed as the machines did not shell out money due to communication failure.
