| Pay commission for employees announced in Punjab | | | Chandigarh, Aug 10: With about six months remaining for assembly elections in Punjab, the state government today decided to set up the Fifth Pay commission for its employees and also abolish Octroi from September one.
The abolition of Octroi should result in reduction in prices of consumer goods besides facilitating free movement of goods vehicles, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who presided over a Cabinet meeting here today, said.
To compensate the urban local bodies for their loss of about Rs 550 crore, 10 per cent of the value added tax (VAT) collection subject to a minimum of Rs 550 crore would be diverted to the urban local bodies, the Cabinet decided. An ordinance would be promulgated at the earliest for the abolition of the Octroi, he said.
The meeting approved the setting up of the 5th Pay commission with immediate effect to review the pay scales and emoluments of its employees. The three members commission would include a chairman, a member and a member secretary, an official spokesman said.
The decision would benefit about three lakh employees of the state government, including of corporations and boards. The commission would submit its report within 18 months of the notification constituting it, which is expected to be issued soon.
