7/3/2007 11:41:16 PM

Jammu, July 3
Normal life was completely thrown out of gear in and around Jammu city on Tuesday following bandh call given by All J&K Unemployed Engineers' Association. The call was given by the engineers association to register their protest against the stoic silence allegedly adopted by the state Govt towards their long pending demand of absorbing unemployed engineers and diploma holders in the govt sector under Rehbar-e-tameerat.
The engineers were reportedly staging dharna and protest demonstration in support of their demands for past three months and were given several assurances by the state govt to examine and fulfill their demands. Not satisfied with the poor pace of progress in their case the unemployed engineers association finally resorted to adopting confrontation approach and gave a Jammu bandh call.
The entire Jammu city wore a deserted look as only scanty private vehicles were seen plying on the road.Since early morning a strong group of unemployed diploma engineers came on to the streets and blocked traffic on the Jammu Pathankot national highway besides forcing shopkeepers to down their shutters across the city.
Heavy traffic and long route buses also remained off the road as city witnessed pitched battles between unemployed engineers and police who resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the agitating engineers near Aisa hotel,Vikram chowk and bus stand.Few public transport buses and private vehicles were also damaged in the morning by protesting engineers while attempting to enforce bandh.
The engineers also staged protest demonstration infront of bus stand police station and shouted anti govt slogans.
The leaders of the engineers association said," despite giving reminders to the state govt no head way has been acheived . the leaders regretted and said that due to delay in translating promise into reality the unemployed engineers were on the verge of crossing the upper age limit bar.
The bandh call was supported by various political and social organisations .BJP, NC, RJD, NPP, Shiv Sena Hindustan, Akhil Bhartiya Rajiv Gandhi Brigade, JJSF, BSP, BM Sangh, Praja Parishad, Lok Jan Shakti Party, ABVP, Sangram Sena, Shiromani Youth Akali Dal, Deshmesh Youth organization, J&K Chamber of Commerce and Industries, transporters and different traders associatios otherwise passed off peacefully. The passengers and Amarnath pilgrims bore the maximum brunt of the bandh call as they were seen shuttling between one place to nother in search of food and items of daily use in the event of strict enforcement of bandh call.A group of Amarnath pilgrims camping in Jammu since Monday morning when contacted near bustand said that they are finding it difficult to find vegetarian food pointing towards shops and hotels in the bus stand area selling non veg food.We donot want to eat non-veg food because we are on pilgrimage and have not performed darshan of Barfani baba
