| Salman Rushdie to divorce | | |
London, July 3: Controversial British-Indian author Salman Rushdie is to divorce his fourth wife Padma Lakshmi, his literary agent said today, adding that it was her who had asked for the split. "Salman Rushdie has agreed to divorce his wife Padma Lakshmi because of her desire to end their marriage," said a statement, adding: "He asks that the media respect his privacy at this difficult time." Lakshmi, 36, who was also born in India, has been an actress and model and has hosted Italian television shows. The announcement came after Rushdie, 60, was awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II last month, triggering widespread Muslim protests, in particular in Pakistan and Iran. Rushdie is accused by some Muslims of blaspheming Islam in his novel "The Satanic Verses" which triggered an international furore when it was first published in 1988. He has been living since then under the shadow of a death sentence imposed by Iran's late supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini which has never been revoked.
