| Zargar reviews functioning of subordinate departments in Doda | | | DODA, JULY 03 Minister for Agriculture, Cooperative, Sericulture and Fisheries, Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar took review of functioning of subordinate departments at Doda the other day. Initiating the review, the Minister said that Government of India is very keen about the growth in the GDP through Agriculture sector and has fixed an allocation of Rs. 25000 crores for this sector in the plan. He said these finances have to be properly utilized to reverse the present downward trend in this sector. While interacting with the officers, Mr. Zargar directed to review the seed procurement policy and fix the targets to meet the necessary requirements of the seed locally after adopting all necessary seed certification norms. He stressed to increase the productivity and production of different crops in the district to make it self sufficient in foodgrains as has been achieved by the Jammu and Kathua districts. He also spoke about the importance of increasing the area under different high yielding vegetables in the areas other than those where the vegetable cultivation has already been adopted like Assar and Ramgarh. Regarding Apiculture, the Minister was informed that there has been more than 80 percent damage to the bee colonies in 2005-06 due to Vora Mite which is almost under control now and another 320 colonies have been given to the farmers on subsidized cost during last year. Stating the importance of soil testing for better crop production, the Minister was informed that proper awareness is given to the farmers about it by the Agriculture Extension workers and the soil samples are properly tested for its nutrient status and necessary fertilizer recommendations are conveyed to the farmers on soil health cards. Director Agriculture, Jammu, Mrs. Vinod Bala Sharma informed the Minister that the soil testing mobile van has been arranged from NFL to have on spot analysis of the soil in the farmers fields. She gave the account of the Zeera produced in the Atholi Farm from 1993-94 to 2005-06. She said that 25 kgs of Zeera has been produced against a capital expenditure of Rs. 1.84 lakh only under very odd security conditions. On importance of mushroom cultivation, Minister stressed to create awareness among the farmers to adopt its cultivation as a good source of income. The Minister showed keen interest when he was informed that turmeric cultivation has been introduced in its programme by the Agriculture department in Doda district and 50 qtls of turmeric seed has been distributed to the farmers during Kharif 2007. He also spoke about the importance to adopting soil conservation measures in this hilly district to maintain the fertility and make best use of available moisture. While reviewing the working of the Cooperative department, Deputy Registrar Co-Operatives Doda informed that timely supply of chemical fertilizers was arranged from Agros and stocked at different sale centers. The Director of Agriculture Jammu who is also the Fertilizers Controller in J&K State briefed about sufficient stocks of fertilizers those were timely arranged from different fertilizer companies for this state. Mr. Zargar told the Deputy Registrar to explore the possibility of creating the resources within the Cooperative Societies to enable to purchase the fertilizers directly from the Fertilizer Companies to avoid the retention of money deposited by the Cooperative with Agro and JAKFED. The Minister while reviewing the working of Sericulture Department expressed satisfaction and asked DDC to make provisions of funds for Sericulture from DPAP. District Development Commissioner, Doda Mr. Saurab Bhagat gave over all appraisal by these departments to the Minister with special reference to the progress achieved in preparation of Strategic Research Extension Plan (SREP) under ATMA and construction of fish pods in the district.
