| Azad reviews flood situation at Kargil | | Announces relief out of CM’s fund | |
Kargil, August 10 : Chief Minister Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad today visited Kargil and handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh to the district administration for immediate relief to the flood affected. Immediately after reaching Kargil, Mr Azad held a high level meeting to review the situation that has arisen due to floods and rains. The meeting was attended by Minister for Transport and Ladakh Affairs Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, Social Welfare Minister Haji Nissar Ali, Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil Mr Asgar Ali Karbalaie, legislators, Chief Secretary Mr C. Phunsog, Deputy Commissioner Kargil besides councilors and other senior officers. In the meeting, Chief Minister was informed about the steps taken by the district administration to cope up with the bursting of canals which have caused floods and colossal damage to infrastructure, standing crops and houses and also resulted in death of four persons and injuries to many others. Chief Minister asked the district administration for immediate clearing of the roads which have been blocked due to rolling down of heavy boulders and landslides. He also asked Public Health Engineering, Roads and Buildings, Rural Development and Irrigation and Flood Control departments to pool all their resources and work round the clock for restoration of all the affected infrastructure. Mr Azad also announced free ration to the residents of the villages where crops have completely destroyed due to floods. He asked Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and district administration to ensure heavy stocking of all essential commodities in the district. Chief Minister also announced that those whose houses have been completely damaged would be given Rs. 10,000 each by the government and in addition he has also sanctioned Rs 10,000 each from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Similarly, those whose houses have been partially damaged would get Rs. 2000 from the government and another Rs. 2000 each from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The meeting was informed that four persons have lost their lives and seven others injured. Two blocks in the district have been affected badly and five partially. In all, 25 villages have been affected severally due to floods in the district. These include eight in Sankoo block, five in Chiktan, four each in Kargil and Shergole, one each in Taisuru and Drass and two in Zanskar block. In all, a population of 21,600 has been affected. As many as 120 zamindari kuhls, 30 foot bridges and 10 water reservoir tanks have been damaged. It was stated that six houses have been fully damaged, 42 partially and household belongings of 48 families have been damaged. Similarly, six mosques and Imambadas and 12 commercial buildings and shops have been damaged. Standing crops spreading over 300 hectares have been damaged, 12000 trees got uprooted and washed away and five private light vehicles and machinery damaged. Thirty cows and zomos and 300 sheep and goats have also been lost. As far as damage to government property is concerned, one DG set, 20 km transmission line, 43 water supply schemes, 15 government buildings, 13 canals and 70 km road length have been damaged due to floods in the district. On the occasion, Haji Nissar Ali and Mr Karbalaie appreciated that the government has quickly responded to the situation and all officers and officials are working tirelessly to provide succour to the flood affected people. They also expressed their satisfaction and gratitude to Mr. Azad for taking keen interest and personally monitoring relief and rehabilitation measures. They said that Mr. Azad tried several times to visit Kargil in the wake of floods but due to bad weather his aircraft had to return back from Kargil airport on Tuesday. They said it is his keen interest that he again made a point to visit the district and assess personally damage caused due to floods and heavy rains. They thanked Mr. Azad for providing immediate relief from government as well as Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the affected people and urged for clearance of all financial liabilities from district treasury so that relief operations are carried in full swing. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma said that the concerned authorities have been asked to make available adequate number of trucks for carrying food grains, other essentials and construction material to Leh and Kargil districts. |
